CHAGEE has continued expanding its Indonesian footprint following its initial entry into Jakarta and Bali.
Its Tunjungan Plaza outlet was positioned as a locally inspired flagship, incorporating Surabaya architectural references and artwork created with a Surabaya-based illustrator.
CHAGEE’s official global store directory currently lists locations across Indonesia, including Jakarta, Bali, and Surabaya. Globally, the company says its network exceeds 6,000 stores across multiple Asia-Pacific markets.
The Indonesian strategy is increasingly moving from market entry into market development.
Why it matters
Indonesia is not an easy premium beverage market.
CHAGEE therefore needs to create a new habit rather than simply introduce a new product.
Its proposition is different from many bubble-tea chains.
That creates differentiation.
But premium positioning also raises the frequency challenge.
A brand can attract queues when it opens.
The harder task is becoming something consumers buy every week.

Our view: CHAGEE has already proven it can create brand heat in Indonesia.
The next question is whether that heat converts into habit.
This is especially important because CHAGEE’s global scale story is becoming more complicated.
The company continues to expand internationally, but its broader network economics suggest that store growth and existing-store productivity need to be evaluated separately.
Indonesia therefore matters not only as another market.
It can become a test of whether the brand’s international model can produce healthy local frequency.
Milk tea and sweet beverages often compete more heavily around indulgence.
CHAGEE needs to define where premium tea fits.
The clearer the occasion, the easier it becomes to build frequency.
The Surabaya flagship demonstrates thoughtful physical localisation.
That is useful.
But operating localisation is more important.
What to watch next
Are mature Indonesian stores maintaining traffic after launch periods?
Can the format work in smaller malls, neighbourhood locations, and less premium real estate?
Does CHAGEE become an occasional treat or a repeat beverage habit?
Can premium positioning remain attractive against local coffee and tea alternatives?
How much should the core menu adapt to Indonesian taste?
Which markets follow Jakarta, Bali, and Surabaya?

A beautiful flagship can help establish the brand.
It does not automatically create strong unit economics.
But these same characteristics also attract intense competition.
The opportunity is large.
The consumer has many substitutes.
CHAGEE does not need to become Indonesia’s largest beverage chain to win.
It needs to establish a defensible premium-tea habit with enough frequency and store productivity to justify expansion.
The strongest proof will not be the next flagship opening.
It will be what happens to existing stores after the opening excitement fades.
